HISTORIC MILWAUKEE ROAD TRAIN DEPOT BUILDING AND PROPERTY FOR SALE
This late Victorian style train depot was designed by the railroad company architect James Nettenstrom and built in 1903 as a Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Passenger Railway Station (Milwaukee Road). The Depot is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, in Menominee's beautiful downtown historic district near the shores of Green Bay. It is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. The depot was used as a passenger station from 1903 till the late 20's. It was then "refitted" as a freight depot. I believe it was used as a freight depot till sometime in the late 60's or early 70's.
The wooden exterior, with it's magnificent brackets and columns, has recently been restored and repainted, including a new roof. In the way of updating, there are new underground water, sewer, electricity and phone lines to the building. The antique windows are currently covered with plywood, but when uncovered, they add immense beauty to the building. Several of the windows have been completely restored. The building was built upon massive beams to last a long, long time.... On the property, there are old railroad tracks, and below the current grade, are the original platform and brickwork.
The interior of the depot is highly restorable, and retains much of its original character, including the original multi-diamond glass window sashes, storm windows, woodwork, railroad safe, the original operators desk on the track side, and much more. .
The building has over 2000 square feet of interior floor space, and approximately 500 square feet of outdoor area under the passenger pavilion. It is centered on 1.1 acres (6 city lots +) and has an ample lawn or parking area. Currently zoned for business.
As a historic structure, it is eligible for tax credits, and some types of grants, depending on use and other factors.
The right type of business would do wonderfully in this location. It would also make a great home, or can have any of a number of uses. Menominee boasts a beautiful Marina that is not too far away from the Depot and brings a large amount of seasonal tourism which only adds to the charm.
