THIS IS A WATERCOLOR PAINTING BY HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY (1872 - 1952)
Howard Chandler Christy' was one of America's most distinguished illustrators, whose work, like that of Norman Rockwell, successfully captured the pulse of the nation. Christy's painting of the signing of the Constitution hangs in the east stairway in the House wing of the United States Capitol. His paintings and portraits also hang in the White House.
This Christy watercolor is the original work of art for the illustration of the famous Civil War novel , The Cavalier" by George W. Cable , which was published in 1901.
This painting is truly a historic work and important piece of Americana in splendid condition. The work is featured on page 86 of Cable's novel.
It is signed, Howard Chandler Christy and dated 1901 in the lower left hand corner.
The piece has been upgraded to conservation by a professional framer. It is beautifully housed in a handsome wood frame. It is also protected by UV, museum, non reflective glass, the best possible framing glass available today. It is ready to hang in a museum, your library or special room.
I am including an original copy of the Cable novel as seen in the photos. Also, I am including a piece of the original backing that was removed for conservation purposes. On this backing is the remnants of a sticker with a partial description of the work and reference to the "Cavalier".
This work truly belongs in a museum or to a serious collector of Christy's work or a civil war enthusiast.
This is a large work and forgive my photography but it was difficult because of its size. In particular, the rich beauty and patina of the wood frame does not translate in the photos. The frame compliments the painting perfectly and looks great in person.
The size of the piece is 50 inches long by 38 inches wide. The image size is 37 inches long by 25 inches wide.
This is guaranteed to be an original work of art by Howard Chandler Christy
