A rare, early watercolor painting by Southern California artist Harold "Hal" Reike. Paper mat over the painting is signed by the artist and painted in 1950. On the painting itself, he indicates Easter, 1951.
It appears Mr. Reike travelled to Europe during the 1950s and painted along the way. This is a scene depicting Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. The border of Austria and Germany crosses through the mountain. It is above the little village of Grainau, which he also painted. Please see that painting that I have listed also.
This watercolor was painted on watercolor paper. The paper is about 12-5/8 x 9-1/2. The image as seen through the paper mat is about 11 x 7-1/2. The painting does not go to the very edge of the paper. I am including the paper mat as it contains the signture of the artist and the date. The mat is dicolored and torn but when you have it framed, it would be possible to put a new mat on top with just the artist's writing showing. The watercolor is attached to a lightweight cardboard which is also discolored and torn. It is only attached at one corner as the adhesive is dried and not holding on. It will probably be completely detached when you receive it. This will look nice on your wall after you have it matted and framed!
This is one of many pieces of art from a collection by the artist. This collection included art from the 1950s through the 1980s and just a few from the 90s. Many pieces depict everyday scenes in and around Southern California. He was a watercolor painter, pen and ink artist, copper enamel artist, and appears to have worked briefly for the Virginia Darce interior design firm.
